The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will look a lot like the 2017 Jeep Wrangler

JL Wrangler Forums suggests the next-generation Wrangler will be restyled in an evolutionary way that maintains the off-roader's classic looks yet adds new features. The forum used intelligence from spy photos and leaked images to assemble renderings of the new Wrangler.

They show that the front end is still classically Jeep, but with modern updates. The LED headlights and turn signals revealed in FCA drawings are noticeable changes. An interesting touch is just behind the rear bumper, where there appears to be an air dam for aerodynamics. There's still a gap between it and the front fenders to keep the old-school look intact. The grille, windshield, and hood are also more raked for the sake of aerodynamics.

At the back, the lights follow the FCA drawings as well, though the reverse lights from those illustrations appear to be absent. The square taillights are also shown on the truck variant, along with the plastic fender flares of the SUV version. Spy photos of the Wrangler pickup have shown a streamlined box with integrated taillights akin to the Ram, but it's likely to be a placeholder until the final design is selected. The sides of both models also feature more squared-off details in the top and door handles, generally with beveled corners for a more modern look.

The top is where things get fuzzy. The new model might lose its removable top altogether, in favor of removable panels similar to the Jeep Renegade. JL Wrangler Forums illustrated how this could work in the above image. The roof can be removed in sections, and the rear-most windows can also be taken out. The overall effect is similar to that of a current Wrangler Unlimited. There is a potential drawback to this system, though. All of these hard panels will have to be left somewhere. And unlike the current model, this one wouldn't have a soft-top back-up when the weather turns. It's hard to say for sure if this design will make it to production. FCA has consistently and effectively hidden this part of its Wrangler prototypes since they were first spotted. At this point, we can only speculate on how the top will function.

Otherwise, these renderings seem plausible, and we should know how accurate they are when the Wrangler makes its expected debut next year. The new Wrangler will likely have some aluminum body panels, an 8-speed automatic and an available diesel powertrain. For more details and spy photos, check out our post that has assembled everything we know so far about the 2018 Wrangler.

Wrangler to get “special” treatment

The Jeep Wrangler will be getting the “special” treatment over its final year in JK form, with several named editions to be issued, according to Automotive News’ Larry Vellequette.

The Wrangler JL is due in late 2017, as a 2018 model. Automotive News believes the current JK series will end in September 2017, but one Allpar source believes the JK and JL will overlap for the 2018 model year.

According to the industry weekly, dealers have already been told about the 2017 Wrangler Sport Freedom and Sahara Winter editions, with sales starting in December. Oddly, the Freedom will only last until February, while Winter will continue through May.

The Sport Freedom comes with a star motif on the hood and fenders, an American flag decal on one fender, and other badging; 18-inch Sahara wheels, a new rear differential cover, black fuel door cover, and taillamp guards, for $30,690 (add $3,900 for the four door) including destination.

The Sahara Winter has the LED headlamps and fog lamps introduced this year, along with remote start (automatic only), rock rails, hard top, and numerous decals, badges, and accents. The two door starts at $37,440 with the four door adding $3,800.

Automotive News claimed that other special editions would include the Sport Big Bear, Sahara Chief, Sahara Smoky Mountain, and Rubicon Recon (replacing the Hard Rock in February).

The replacement for the current Wrangler, in production for around a decade, will have an optional eight-speed automatic, which should help both acceleration and economy. It’s set to be built in Toledo, in the plant that currently makes the Cherokee; the current Toledo Wrangler plant may also be used after a refit. The Cherokee will move to Belvidere, Illinois, next month, with the Dart already gone and the current Compass/Patriot slated to be stopped.

Polaris Introduces MY17 RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP Turbo 4 EPS

The Most Powerful Factory Side-by-Sides Ever

Polaris RZR sets another new standard in razor-sharp performance with the introduction of the RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS. Featuring a new ProStar® Turbo H.O. engine that unleashes 168 horsepower – the most power ever offered on a factory side-by-side – the vehicles offer 15 percent more power than last year’s models and 9 percent more than anything else on the market.

To match the horsepower upgrade – and significantly improve on 2016 models – the 2017 RZR XP Turbo models feature new, high-capacity cooling, and a stronger driveline to get that power to the ground. The high-capacity cooling includes a new, more powerful, variable-speed, brushless fan coupled with a new, 40-percent larger, high-flow front grill and a 20-percent larger engine radiator. The new cooling ensures the engine can breathe for maximum power delivery.

The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS boast the most premium suspension, with exclusive FOX Podium® Internal Bypass Shocks that deliver the plushest ride and best handling found on a side-by-side. The shocks generate progressive damping force that gives the vehicles a smooth ride with all the bottom-out resistance expected from ultra-performance off-road vehicles. Large-diameter shock bodies (3-in/7.6 cm rear, 2.5-in./6.4-cm front), adjustable remote reservoirs and increased fluid capacity provide dramatic improvements in heat dissipation, fade resistance and durability. By using five compression zones to provide progressive damping as the shock gently absorbs bumps and stiffens to prevent bottoming, the Internal Bypass Shocks feel like five shocks in one. Combine that with three zones of rebound damping to minimize pitching, plus harsh top out for an ultra-plush ride and better handling over a wider range of terrain at any speed.

For ultimate agility, the vehicles feature front and re-tuned rear stabilizer bars to virtually eliminate body roll for flatter cornering. For quicker steering, both vehicles have a new 1.5-turn steering rack, paired with standard Electronic Power Steering (EPS). The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS’ industry-leading braking performance ensures precision stopping. The brakes feature large, triple-piston front calipers, dual-piston rear calipers, stainless-steel rotors and large 248-mm ventilated discs on all four corners, for powerful stopping performance.

The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS will be available in late 2016 in Titanium Matte Metallic and Cruiser Black. The two-seat model will retail for $24,999 U.S. and the four-seat for $27,499 U.S. Both models come with an extended two-year factory warranty when purchased before December 31, 2016.

For customers looking for high performance at value pricing, the 2016 RZR XP Turbo is now available for $19,999 U.S. and the 2016 RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS is $22,499 U.S.

2017 Ram 1500 Rebel Mojave Sand and Ignition Orange Sport

Ram launched two pickup packages in November 2016 — the 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel Mojave Sand package and the Ignition Orange Ram 1500 Sport. Only 1,500 copies of the special Rebel and 1,500 of the 2017 Ignition Orange Rams will be made.

2017 is the first and only Ram to get Mojave Sand paint; the Rebel Mojave Sand also has a black-decaled hood and fully black interior. New interior trim includes black anodized bezels on the doors, center console, instrument panel, and gauge cluster trim rings; the seats are all black, instead of black with Radar Red. Accent stitching is light gray, and deep rubber floor mats have embossed gray ram-head logos.

The Ram 1500 Rebel Mojave Sand will have all normal Rebel configurations and options, and list for $45,590 plus $1,320 destination — that’s $595 extra for the package. The Rebel Mojave Sand is to hit dealerships in December 2016.

The Ram 1500 Ignition Orange Sport, a repeat of a prior limited edition, has a Sport hood with black decals, black Ram’s head grille badge, black tailgate badge, and black body-side badges.

The interior has “Copperhead” accent stitching, Sport seat embroidery, accent-color ram heads embroiderered on the headrests, and colored-accent sport mesh on the seat inserts. There are also Anodized Orange-painted spears and trim rings. JEEP® ON THE ROCKS ROLLS ON FOR RED ROCKS 75th ANNIVERSARY

When it comes to open-air freedom, Jeep® vehicles and Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre go hand-in-hand. That’s why the Jeep brand has been sponsoring the Jeep Summer Concert Series for four years running, bringing the iconic brand to the legendary Morrison, Colorado, concert and entertainment venue.

This year was particularly special — while the Jeep brand celebrates its 75th lineup, Red Rocks was also celebrating its 75th anniversary. For the October 7, 2016, show, Jeep on the Rocks, headliner Bastille filled the mountain air with its special brand of British indie pop music, and inspired a crowd of outdoor music lovers and Trail Rated® adventure seekers.

In addition to the beats from Bastille and the spectacular mountain views, Jeep vehicle owners were treated to designated “Jeep Only” parking areas at the event, and everyone in attendance had access to a special geo-targeted Snapchat filter.

Great things happen when Jeep 4×4 vehicles make their way up the mountains. We can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for the 2017 concert series.

Chrysler Pacifica: 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year Finalist

We Like: Its styling inside and out, functionality, and independent rear suspension.

We Don’t Like: Waiting for the hybrid.

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivan surprised and delighted. Chris Theodore called it the best Chrysler minivan since the 1996 model was named Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Watch the 2017 Motor Trend Awards LIVE on November 14 at 7:30 p.m. PT, and don’t miss all the latest Car, Truck, and SUV of the Year content at MotorTrendAwards.com!

Judges were impressed with the drive performance, which had surprisingly little body roll, an improved nine-speed transmission, and an adroitness that belies the minivan class. “If you didn’t know you were in a minivan and opened your eyes for the first time,” guest judge Theodore said, “you’d swear you were in a luxury SUV.”

We like the modern look, hidden sliding door tracks, and tasteful interior with touches such as van silhouettes imprinted into the console rubber mat. Editor-in-Chief Ed Loh liked the satin nickel finish and called the steering wheel “a joy to hold.”

As technical director Frank Markus said, functionality is a minivan’s “sole raison d’ĂȘtre,” and the Pacifica gets top marks for the comfortable Stow ’n Go seats, which can fold flat or tilt forward with a child seat intact. A lighter body allowed Chrysler to add more equipment, including a built-in vacuum, the van’s first independent rear suspension, and the upcoming hybrid two-motor e-CVT, which gets 80 mpg-e and could be a game changer. We like the option of normal or adaptive cruise control for when road crud fouls the radar lens.

The result: a lot of vehicle for the price. International bureau chief Angus MacKenzie summarized our thoughts: “The Pacifica is class-leading and by far the best thing sold under the Chrysler nameplate at the moment.”

The Dodge Shakedown Challenger Is Bizarrely Wonderful

If ever there were proof that Bizarro World exists, then this Dodge Shakedown Challenger at the 2016 SEMA show might just be it. Whereas the modern Dodge Challenger is a new car made to look like an old car, the Shakedown Challenger is an old car made to look like a new car. Bizarro, indeed.

Although the Shakedown is technically a 1971 Challenger, the crew at FCA added the headlights, taillights, and a grille from the 2017 Challenger to give the classic coupe a contemporary look. A custom lower front fascia, rear lip spoiler, and modern 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels that share a design with the wheels featured on the Challenger SRT Hellcat further blur the line between old and new.

The Shakedown Challenger's looks aren't all that has been updated for the 21st century. As the giant "Mopar 392" fender decals imply, the Shakedown is motivated by Dodge's 485-hp 6.4-liter V8. A functional hood scoop, a cold-air intake, and a custom-made exhaust provide the 392-cubic-inch engine with an extra bit of grunt. Meanwhile, a six-speed manual transmission cribbed from the Viper puts the pushrod engine's ponies to the rear wheels. Custom suspension components and Brembo brake calipers from the Hellcat ensure the Shakedown's other dynamic qualities are as capable as its impressive powertrain.

Dodge didn't leave the vintage Challenger's outmoded interior untouched, either. The Shakedown's insides include a modern Mopar gauge cluster, as well as a steering wheel and seats culled from today's Viper. The rear seats have been removed, too, replaced by a parcel shelf and a roll bar, while a fuel cell and its associated filler sit in the Shakedown's trunk.

The Dodge Shakedown Challenger is quite possibly the most meta car we've ever laid eyes on. After all, this classic Challenger is styled to look like a car that was originally designed to mimic the looks of the 1970–71 Challenger. It seems, then, that the modern-looking, 45-year-old Dodge Shakedown Challenger is Chrysler's attempt to shake things up, not down. Which kind of makes sense, because in Bizarro World "down" actually means "up."
