2014 Nissan Versa Note, Now Available At Amazon...

Once upon a time, Walmart seemed very, very weird. "Who would want to get groceries, gardening supplies, and oil changes, all in the same place?", we wondered.
Then the internet hit the mainstream and showed big-box retailers how it's done. Seriously, have you looked at Amazon lately? If you can't find it there, you may not need it.
That said, there are a couple of exceptions to that rule, a couple of areas that Amazon hasn't conquered. Prescription drugs are one. Cars are another -- or at least they were. From now until November 5, Amazon is dipping its little toe in the world of wheels by selling one very special car: the 2014 Nissan Versa Note.
Well, sort of.
You can't actually purchase a Versa Note through Amazon.com. But there is a Versa Note product page --- just like all the other product pages for all the other bits and bobs you can buy on the site. And although it's not as nice to look at as Nissan's "official" Versa Note page (or even TheCarConnection's review page), it offers plenty of info for curious shoppers.
However, instead of Amazon's usual "Add to cart" option on the right-hand side of the page, there's just a button that says "Learn more". Click it, and you'll be asked to provide your ZIP code so that Amazon can connect you with a nearby Nissan dealer.
Which is, more or less, how many automaker sites work. So, why should Nissan "sell" the Versa Note on Amazon at all?
For starters, it's a cute gimmick. It's Nissan's way of suggesting that cars can be sold as quickly and easily as diapers or watchbands (which is interesting but completely laughable, as anyone who's ever purchased from a dealer knows). That alone could turn a few heads.
For shoppers, however, the biggest upside of this promotion is that the first 100 Versa Note customers whose purchases are initiated through Amazon receive $1,000 Amazon gift cards. If you're a frequent user of the site, that's like cutting the cost of the Versa Note to $12,990.
Frankly, we're most intrigued by the fact that some customers will receive their Versa Notes via "boxed" home delivery. Does that mean that UPS will wait around long enough for recipients to answer the door? That could be the biggest news of all.

Gasoline prices drop closer to $3 and could keep falling

Remember $3 gas? Well the price is headed down and might get back to that level again after more than three years.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States fell 6.4 cents in the last two weeks, as crude oil declined and refiners passed on the difference to motorists.

Some industry experts believe the price could keep falling, even below $3 per gallon for the first time in three years.

According to the latest Lundberg survey, the average price was about 31 cents lower than a year ago, based on the Sept. 20 survey of some 2,500 retail stations in the 48 contiguous states.

Trilby Lundberg, survey editor, said the rise came alongside a decline in the price of crude oil. Crude has fallen as Libya has produced more and there have been signs of diplomatic progress regarding Syria and Iran.

"California did buck the trend because of some recent hiccups in the California refining capacity affecting the West," Lundberg said. "Prices rose at the pump about 16 cents in California, but the spike has already died as those glitches have already been resolved."

Charleston, South Carolina, had the cheapest gasoline in the survey at $3.14 per gallon, while drivers in San Francisco, paid the most at $4.01 per gallon.

According to another survey, by the American Automobile Association, pump prices are in their usual September decent as demand weakens and supplies increase. But the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded remains well above $3 for the 1,007th day in a row, it said.

“It’s normal for prices to fall in September,” said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman. “The summer driving season is over, demand is down, and refineries are switching to the cheaper winter-blend gasoline.”

“Prices could continue to fall another 5 to 10 cents before the end of the month,” Jenkins said. “But it’s unlikely."

GasBuddy.com, which monitors prices across the United States, also forecast cheaper prices to come.

GasBuddy's chief oil analyst Tom Kloza predicts that the fall will see slow but steady attrition in retail gas numbers, thanks to record high U.S. refining rates and consumer demand that will at best match 2012 levels. "Supplies are adequate, and indeed gasoline now typically sells for just a few dollars more than raw crude costs. They’ll go below $3.00 anytime soon.”

Nissan Rogue adds third row for 2014

Nissan unveiled the grown-up-looking Rogue SUV at the Frankfurt motor show on Tuesday. The second-best-selling vehicle in Nissan’s lineup will sticker for $23,350 when it goes on sale in November.

Every Rogue will come with Nissan’s 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine making 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. The company’s continuously variable transmission is also standard, as are four-wheel disc brakes. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. The Rogue rides on the jointly developed Nissan/Renault Common Module Family platform architecture, scheduled to be offered in 190 countries.

"There is growing demand for compact SUVs around the world due to their user-friendly combination of right-sized exteriors, flexible interior utility and low environmental impact," said Fred Diaz, divisional vice president of sales and marketing, Nissan North America. "By sharing development costs, while adapting powertrains, designs and equipment offerings for each specific region, Nissan has been able to add features and technologies while keeping prices affordable."

For 2014 the Rogue will offer three-row, seven-passenger seating as well as the “Divide and Hide” cargo system that provides 18 different variations between cargo and passenger space.

Optional extras include navigation, Nissan’s Around View monitor, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning.

Fuel economy is rated at 33 mph highway for front-wheel drive models, which is an 18 percent improvement over last year. The base all-wheel-drive Rogue costs $24,700, and the most expensive model will sticker for $30,280.

Chrysler celebrates 30 years of minivans with special Grand Caravan, Town & Country

Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan will offer unique interior trim.

This year has seen quite a few important automotive milestones. Aston Martin celebrated its centennial, and the Porsche 911 turned 50, as did the Lotus Elan.

Even Cunningham had a milestone to celebrate, with the marque founded by Briggs Cunningham turning 60. An anniversary you might not have heard about with all the hubbub surrounding the celebrations at Pebble Beach, Lime Rock and other venues is Chrysler's minivans turning 30.

That's right, it's been 30 years since Chrysler hit a home run, at the 11th hour as per usual, and launched the Town & Country minivan, liberating millions of kids from the drudgery of riding in the back of the family station wagons to and from sporting events. And now that we've reached a point in time when people are actually nostalgic about riding in the cargo areas of faux-wood bedecked station wagons, Chrysler is debuting a special edition Town & Country and Grand Caravan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of its Chrysler and Dodge minivans.

The Town & Country 30th Anniversary Edition will be based on the Touring-L model and will feature 17-inch wheels with polished faces, "30th Anniversary" badging and Granite Crystal paint as an option. This special edition will use the 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, making 283 hp. Interior touches will include black Alcantara seat inserts with napa seat bolsters, piano-black steering wheel bezel, and a "30th Anniversary" logo in the gauge cluster. The Convenience Group options will be standard in this model, which means it'll have heated first- and second-row seating, power adjustable pedals and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, in addition to other luxury touches.

The Grand Caravan 30th Anniversary Edition will be available on the SE and SXT models, and will feature the same 3.6-liter engine as in the Town & Country. The Dodge Grand Caravan SE 30th Anniversary Edition will have 17-inch polished satin carbon-aluminum wheels, body-color heated exterior mirrors and "30th Anniversary" badging on the front fenders. On the interior, arguably where it matters most, the 30th Anniversary Dodge Grand Caravan will feature silver accent stitching and piano-black accents, black cloth seats and a black leather-wrapped steering wheel, in addition to other luxury details. The SXT trim version of the anniversary model will have all the features of the SE, but with added luxury touches like chrome window trim moldings and roof rack, fog lamps and black Torino Leatherette seats with suede inserts and silver accent stitching.

10 Used Cars You Should Probably Own

Buy Into the Fun, but not the Depreciation

Return on investment can be measured in many ways. In cars, though, it's almost always twofold: fun behind the wheel and financial prudence (a.k.a., not losing your shirt). The first is easy, especially if you've got a real budget. The second, however, is rare. Getting both in one car is like finding a unicorn in Detroit.

But it can be done.

We found 10 cars (OK, there are a few trucks) that are decidedly cool, hold their value and aren't likely to depreciate while you enjoy them. Heck, we'd even bet you could make money on most.

As always, there are exceptions. Maintenance costs are the big one and it's hard to pin down which car might do the least damage to your wallet in the long run. A good pre-purchase inspection with a reputable mechanic will go a long way in making sure you buy the right car. So will some real research. All of these cars are supported by a library of Web-based knowledge, so there's no excuse. And even though there are no guarantees, there are some pretty solid bets.

So here they are.

1991 Acura NSX
Cost: $28,000-$49,000
Why: It's been nearly a decade since the last new NSX rolled off the assembly line and early models are now starting to demand higher prices on the used market. The first year (1991) can be found for just over $20,000 if mileage isn't a concern, but any at- or sub-50,000-mile '91 NSX is going to start above $30,000. The 1991 NSX holds its own even among contemporary cars; its precise manual steering and snappy gearbox continue to offer supercar performance while it remains incredibly comfortable (docile, even) as an everyday driver.

With development involving Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna and its "plucky upstart" status versus the Italian and German supercars of the day, the legend of the NSX grows every year. You'll be hard-pressed to pull up to a Cars and Coffee event in one without drawing a crowd of grinning admirers. As well-maintained early NSXs become rarer, their prices are on the rise: A thorough pre-purchase inspection will help mitigate repair costs of a car that only gets more special with age.

1988 BMW M5
Cost: $9,000-$17,000
Why: The first-generation M5 came to the U.S. in small numbers (around 1,200), but it made a big noise with enthusiasts and the press, beginning a legacy of "super sedans" that continues today. Each successive M5 vies for the Best Car in the World title, but it's the 1988 original that stands out as the greatest-ever melding of balanced, driver-focused performance and luxurious practicality. And let's be honest, there's no questioning the cool factor of a body that was penned in the late '60s.

Despite their rarity in the U.S., many original M5s are driven daily by outright fanatics. While everything else may fail, the 3.5-liter inline-6 engine tends to be rock solid even with high miles. Featuring individual throttle bodies, the U.S. car pumped out 256 horsepower. Surviving 1988 M5s are rare, but many can be found for less than $10,000 with high mileage and (too often) with questionable modifications. Be prepared to shell out upwards of $15,000 for a lower-mileage example with any kind of service record history, and make sure you know a good BMW specialist.

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor
Cost: $33,000-$50,000
Why: Merely looking at the Ford SVT Raptor is a visceral experience. It looks as if it just drove out of the Baja 1000, which would be a mere amusement if it didn't actually deliver. But it does. Off-road, the Raptor can handle just about everything a sane driver will want. And it does it without sacrificing on-road comfort or handling.

The interior is as soft and welcoming as any American cruiser and the 6.2-liter V8 (make sure you get the 6.2-liter) cranks out 411 hp and 434 pound-feet of torque, and makes an unholy racket that will put a smile on your face every time you fire it up. Drop some coin on a low-mile Raptor now, or three times that amount in 20 years at some big auction in the desert: your call.

2005 Honda S2000
Cost: $16,000-$26,000
Why: Honda's beloved S2000 sports car is no longer in production, but its fandom continues. S2000s can be found throughout various model years at fair prices, but it's the post-2004 cars that are truly engaging. And if you want the best S2000, look for a 2005 model. Many fans decried the reduction of the original S2000's 9,000-rpm redline to 8,000 for the 2004 model year, but the shorter 1st through 4th gears along with the increase in usable torque at lower rpm makes the 2005 a more livable car. It simply offers more performance where most drivers actually use it.

With its forward-thinking digital instrument cluster, possibly the best six-speed manual transmission ever made and a naturally aspirated specific output only surpassed when Ferrari released the 458, the S2000 is one of the last great everyman sports cars. Plus, its reliability is exceptional, so feel free to fling a few extra bucks out for a lower-mileage example.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Cost: $17,000-$27,000 (X); $18,000-$33,000 (Sahara); $24,000-$39,000 (Rubicon)
Why: When the four-door 2007 Wrangler Unlimited made its debut, the naysayers came out in force: Four doors went against the ethos of the ultimate everyday off-roader. The stretched wheelbase made the Wrangler too big. It's less capable on difficult terrain. On and on they went.

But Jeep pulled it off.

The Wrangler Unlimited is not only a great off-roader worthy of the Wrangler name, but it's a unique SUV setup that can't be had with any other brand. On top of all that, the modern Wrangler is among the leaders in resale value: and somewhat surprisingly, nowhere is this more evident than with the 2007 Unlimited. It's difficult to find a sub-50,000-mile 2007 Wrangler Unlimited for less than $20,000. For a rough-and-ready SUV that can take you where you need to be with rear seats that fit actual humans, it's hard to argue with a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

1997 Land Rover Defender 90
Cost: $39,000-$75,000
Why: The 182 hp from the Defender's 3.9-liter V8 sounds underpowered today, but when mated to the tried-and-true all-wheel-drive setup of the Range Rover it proves more than enough to do what the Defender was built to do: go anywhere.

The 1997 model-year Defender 90 was the last to be brought to the U.S. market. The niche appeal of its old-school off-roader aesthetic combined with ever-shrinking numbers of well-maintained cars conspires to keep prices exceptionally high. When you see a Defender in person it's easy to understand why they're so coveted: the square-ish, bulky body mated to big, mud-stomping tires tickles just about all of the basic instincts of off-roaders. Built to get you wherever you need to go in all conditions, the Defender 90's high cost of ownership is outweighed by its cool factor, scarcity and raw capability.

1992-1994 Mercedes-Benz 500E/E500
Cost: $15,000-$30,000-plus
Why: In the early 1990s as BMW's M5 established itself as the performance sedan of choice, Mercedes-Benz needed a competitor. W124 E-Class chassis (upgraded with big brakes and the 5.0-liter V8 from the high-end 500SL) were shipped to Porsche's Zuffenhausen plant for assembly.

Only 1,500 were brought to the U.S. during a three-year production run (for its last year in 1994 it was re-designated the E500) so it's becoming harder to find well-maintained low-mileage examples. Diligent searching will pay off with a "sleeper" classic, featuring the grunt of the 5.0-liter V8's 322 hp, a fascinating history and the quirky charm that comes with being "the other guy." Overlooked even by many Mercedes fans, the 500E is a cool divergent footnote in automotive history that also happens to go really fast.

1995 Porsche 911 (993)
Cost: $24,000-$40,000
Why: For many Porsche devotees, the 993-era 911 represents the pinnacle of what a "real" 911 should be: air-cooled, small and focused. Its replacement — the water-cooled, daily-driver-focused 996 — was bigger and heavier. The culmination of more than 30 years of innovation and refinement, the 993 offers classic 911 handling while its air-cooled flat-6 makes all the right noises.

As a benchmark 911 model, the 993 retains its value on the used market. As the years go by, more 993 owners either decide they can't part with their treasures or they have "off-road incidents," so expect more scarcity of selection and higher premiums to buy into the club.

2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder
Cost: $55,000-$70,000
Why: A fitting last hurrah for the 987-era Boxster, the Spyder edition was produced as a 2011 and 2012 model before the introduction of the current-generation 981. It is nearly 180 pounds lighter than the 987 Boxster S and brings 10 additional horses to the table (320 in all). The Spyder was (and some still say is) the hot roadster to own.

Sitting 1 inch lower than the regular Boxster and with a stiffened suspension, the Spyder enhanced the already excellent driving characteristics of the Boxster to miraculous levels. The 2011 Boxster Spyder entered the market as a production model, so for now at least it's not terribly difficult to find a used one with low mileage and a clean maintenance history: but it is expensive. Buying and babying one of these now may prove to be a sound investment as they become rarer in the future. In any case, it'll be a fun investment.

2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI
Cost: $16,000-$25,000
Why: The first-year of Subaru's rally-inspired WRX STI stuffs 300 hp and an impressive all-wheel-drive system into the restrained and practical Impreza sedan. Few cars yield the STI's combination of high performance and four-door utility.

The inconsistent availability of Subarus in various U.S. markets means that used pricing is all over the place, but look to spend at or near $20,000 for an example with fewer than 100,000 miles on the clock. Lower-mileage 2004 examples can climb into the mid-$20,000 range: impressive considering the $31,525 MSRP of a new 2004 STI. The 2004 STI did more than establish Subaru with American enthusiasts; it created an entirely new segment of performance car made to handle alternative roads and weather. And families fit, too.

Grab a 2004 STI now before it is officially deemed a modern classic.

Plymouth Historical Museum Gearing Up for Annual Craft Bazaar

The museum is now accepting applications for its annual juried Craft Bazaar, which will be held Dec. 7.
Looking for unique holiday presents for family and friends? How about hand-made crafts?

The Plymouth Historical Museum will host its 8th Annual Juried Craft Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Applications are now being accepted. Applicants need to submit three to four photos of craft items for judges to determine participants as there is a limit of crafters to five per category. Table rentals are $30 each, and most are 8 feet wide, although there are some space variations available. Space is tight, so venders will need to limit their display area to the size of the table or an equivalent space.

Linda Trewin of Livonia has been participating in the bazaar as a crafter for all eight years.

"I do it for the museum," she said.

Trewin's table will consist of knitted scarves, dish cloths and necklaces, beaded bracelets and a variety of custom earrings.

"It's at a good time - it's the beginning of December," she said. "I got into crafts when I was going to college and working more than 40 hours a week because I couldn't come down at night. I've been knitting and crocheting for 10 to 12 years. I'm not an expert at it like some of my friends are that can make baby clothes. But I can knit necklaces and dish cloths. They really like the cotton dish cloths that I make because they're so versatile."

The Museum is offering free admission that day for both Museum patrons and Craft Bazaar shoppers.

For more information, visit www.plymouthhistory.org.

1950 Dodge Coronet Diplomat

In 1949-50, a hot new fad was sweeping through the auto industry: the hardtop convertible. Here’s Dodge’s contribution to the styling trend, the 1950 Coronet Diplomat.

When first you hear it, the term “hardtop convertible” sounds like an oxymoron—like “constant variable” or “jumbo shrimp.” Hold on, and we’ll make some sense of it. In the late ’40s, industry product planners discovered that many new car buyers, especially young people, purchased convertibles but then seldom if ever took down the tops. Perplexed by this curious fact—convertibles were significantly more expensive than sedans—they investigated further.

Through interviews, they learned that many owners simply preferred the convertible’s sporty styling and its lower, sleeker roof. Buyers also appreciated the lack of a fixed pillar between the front and rear side glasses. With both windows rolled down, the long, open expanse created the fresh-air feel of a convertible without the exposure to sun and wind that resulted when the top was folded down.

Armed with this knowledge, the automakers quickly responded with a new body style called the hardtop convertible: It had a low roofline and roll-down windows with no center post, but with a fixed steel roof replacing the folding fabric top. This new two-door body type offered both a price savings for customers and a tidy profit for carmakers. The public quickly shortened the awkward term “hardtop convertible” to simply “hardtop,” and a popular Detroit body style took root.

Dodge’s version of the hardtop, the handsome 1950 Coronet Diplomat, matched the traditional soft-top convertible in sales in its very first year. The hardtop model was renamed Sport in 1954, then rebadged again in 1955 as the Lancer. While they no longer refer strictly to hardtop body styles, the Diplomat, Sport and Lancer nameplates have appeared and reappeared on various Dodge models throughout the brand’s history. The most recent Lancer and Diplomat models were offered in 1989.

2014 Nissan Rogue

The 2014 Nissan Rogue / X-Trail was unveiled Tuesday at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show with a more aggressive exterior and an interior aimed at providing more utility and comfort. Nissan also announced pricing on the 2014 Rogue compact crossover for the U.S.: A 2014 Nissan Rogue S will start at $23,350, including destination when it goes on sale in November. All-wheel drive is available on every 2014 Rogue trim from the S to the SV and SL, at a cost of $1350.

Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn introduced the line, which will offer seating for seven, including a sliding second-row seat. Cargo area is easily created by folding the third row flat when necessary.

Ghosn, who said the X-Trail (it will still be badged as the Rogue in the U.S.) will present "class-leading levels of value, performance, and style," also said that powertrain efficiencies mean the crossover will get 20 percent better fuel economy than the models it replaces. It will also earn Nissan's blue "Pure Drive" badge. The 2013 Nissan Rogue gets an EPA-rated 22-23/27-28 mpg city/highway, and Nissan is targeting 33 mpg highway for the 2014 model.

Nissan announced in an accompanying release that the 2014 Rogue will start at $23,350 for the S front-drive model. That represents a price increase of over $2000 compared to the outgoing model. The top of the line will be the all-wheel-drive 2014 Rogue SL, which has a base price of $30,280. The tech available in the Rogue includes NissanConnect with navigation and apps, around-view monitor with moving-object detection, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and full LED headlights.

The Rogue will be powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, the latter a number Nissan cites as being best-in-class.

The exterior has definitely been retuned toward more aggressive front- and back-ends, with LED daytime running lights surrounding the available LED headlights. Muscular ridges around the wheel wells give the Rogue more of a sport-ute appearance rather than the around-town family vehicle many use it as.

Inside, Ghosn said people would find "unexpected comfort and quietness" due to soft-touch materials and engineering focus on NVH.

The NASA-influenced high-comfort driver seat design that debuted in the 2013 Nissan Altima will be picked up for the X-Trail.

The X-Trail / Rogue will be built at nine different plants around the world.

  1. While August marked our 41st consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains, it also marked our 30th consecutive month of 100,000+ sales totals. Just as recently as 2010, we only had three months when sales topped 100,000.
  2. While August truck/SUV sales nipped car sales growth (12% vs 11%), for the year car sales are +18% while truck/SUV sales are +6% in 2013. Five of our six car models (currently in production) have a year-to-date sales increase.
  3. Our Belvidere, Ill., Assembly Plant is home to three of our six vehicles that set August sales records: Dodge Dart, Jeep® Compass and Jeep Patriot.
  4. Dodge Journey (+12% sales growth, up to 8,890 sold) had its. best. month. ever.

State fair 'found its home' in Novi - Labor Day weekend event's attendance climbs to 75,000

From the VIP kickoff Thursday evening until the last visitor left Monday night, it was obvious that the return of the Michigan State Fair is here to stay.

“The fair has definitely found its home in Novi at the Suburban Collection Showplace,” said Blair Bowman, owner of the facility. “It will be back next year bigger, better and more fun!”

Attendance climbed dramatically from last year. The 2012 Great Lakes State Fair tallied around 50,000, while this year’s Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair hit between 75,000 and 80,000, according to Bowman.

That’s impressive given that the event is up against Arts Eats & Beats in Royal Oak and the Detroit Jazz Festival, which combined drew around 600,000.

Likewise, the state fair’s animal and agricultural livestock exhibits jumped 150 percent and there was nearly double the seating capacity for the circus.

“The customer feedback was overwhelmingly positive,” Bowman said. “Literally, we were being thanked by more people when leaving than we were thanking people for coming.”

As pleased as Bowman was with the turnout, he was equally impressed with the community giveback element of the Labor Day weekend event. More than 150 individuals volunteered, as did folks from the Detroit Shriners. Sponsors included Fifth Third Bank (presenting), Bright House (circus), Walmart (midway) and St. John’s Providence (entertainment stage).

“We could not have had better partners and provided a better experience than we did for this year’s event,” Bowman said. “The city of Novi community support was incredible as well with the fire department, police department and city administration all pulling together to help provide support for the event.”

Up-and-coming local acts provided music during the daytime, while established musicians – all with Michigan ties – performed during the evenings, including headliners Marshall Crenshaw, George Bedard and Stewart Francke.
A fair goer's view

Leslie Adams flew in from Florida to attend a family gathering over the holiday weekend with her sons – Luke, 25, Fed, 24, and John, 23. They attended the fair Saturday night along with their four cousins, sampling corn dogs and elephant ears and hitching rides on Salt & Pepper, Pharaoh’s Fury, Bumper Cars, Orbiter and even the Big Slide.

“I have not attended a real state fair in years and this was just a lot of fun all around,” Adams said, adding that her group was impressed with the animals on display in the livestock area.

She and her brother and his wife enjoyed some beer and wine in the entertainment tent, catching Steven Mullan & The Toledo Kids.

“He was adorable with a fresh voice and was fun to listen to,” Adams said, “but the big draw was Marshall Crenshaw and his band, the Bottle Rockets. He is a great performer and they had a terrific sound. I was familiar with some of his songs, but really enjoyed the whole show. The kids even came in at the end and listened for a while.”

Adams said her overall impression of the state fair was that it was clean and organized and parking was easy.

“It reminded me of when I was a kid,” she said. “Plus, all of our kids (young adults) had a good time, too. I hope it continues to grow – and I hope I am in town next year.”
A family affair

For Mike Watts, the fair’s executive director this year, it was most gratifying to see all the families – including his own.

“My nieces stayed for eight hours,” Watts said, “and my neighbor’s autistic adult son had his caregivers bring him back for a second day because he enjoyed it so much.”

Watts said during the process of promoting the fair, he was interviewed by media almost daily and he encountered something that had never happened to him before.

“At the beginning of every interview or segment, they thanked me for bringing back the state fair and that made me feel very special,” Watts said. “I know that the thank you was to all of us who worked on pulling this event together and I expressed that repeatedly, but it was a wonderful experience for me.”

Bowman said it is a certainty that the Michigan State Fair will return again to the Suburban Collection Showplace in 2014.

“Plans are already under way for major new features, including significant new rides within the midway, a larger arena and an increase in our major scholarship initiatives that were launched this year,” he said

Six Vehicle Warning Signs Your Nose Can Recognize

Most vehicles start out with a “new car smell,” but there are other specific odors that motorists should never ignore. Identifying these suspect smells early on can help car owners be car care aware and avoid the hassle and expense of an unexpected breakdown, says the Car Care Council.
“Unusual smells can be the sign of serious, and potentially costly, trouble for your vehicle. By acting quickly and making necessary repairs, you’ll be able to breathe easy knowing there is no harmful damage to your car,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.
The Car Care Council recommends a sniff test of your vehicle to identify any unusual smells, including the following six warning signs:

1.  The smell of burnt rubber could be slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. Do not reach in if the engine compartment is hot.
2.  The smell of hot oil could mean that oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. To verify the leak, look for oil on the pavement or smoke coming from the engine area.
3.  The smell of gasoline is likely the sign of a gas leak in some area of the vehicle such as a fuel injector line or the fuel tank. Any smell of fuel can result in a possible fire hazard, so immediate attention should be given.
4.  The sweet smell of syrup may be a sign that your car is leaking engine coolant from a leaky component related to the car’s cooling system. Do not open the radiator cap when it is hot.
5.  The smell of burning carpet could be a sign of brake trouble and a safety hazard. Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell is happening during normal driving conditions.
6.  The smell of rotten eggs is never a good one and, if you smell it coming from your vehicle, it could mean a problem with your catalytic converter not converting the hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly. This smell can also be attributed to a poor running engine, causing the catalytic converter to become overloaded and fail due to meltdown.
“When you smell any peculiar odor, you should not ignore it. Instead bring your vehicle to a professional service technician that you trust to get an informed opinion on the nature of the odor,” concluded White.
The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
