Roadside Emergency Kit a Perfect Gift for the College Bound

School is almost back in session and students across the country will soon be packing up their cars and heading off to college. If you are searching for that perfect gift for the college-bound kid in your life, the Car Care Council suggests putting together a roadside emergency kit.

“A roadside kit is easy to assemble, not too expensive and extremely useful, plus it could be a life saver in the event of an emergency,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “While it’s always a good idea to be prepared for the unexpected while on the road, the best option is to avoid breakdowns and car trouble wherever possible. Performing basic maintenance and observing a regular service schedule can help avoid unforeseen road emergencies.”

Roadside emergency items can fit into a small duffle bag or rubber storage tote and include the following:

- Jumper cables
- Emergency flares
- Flashlight with batteries
- Blankets and extra clothes
- Non-perishable snacks and bottled water
- First aid kit, including essential medications
- Portable USB charger to keep the cell phone running even if the car is not
- Ice scraper, snow brush and small shovel for winter driving
- The Car Care Guide, available free of charge at carcare.org

Visit the Car Care Council’s website to access a number of tips and resources for vehicle maintenance, including a free custom service schedule.

Dream Vacation or Nightmare Road Trip? Pre-Trip Vehicle Check Can Make the Difference

Road trip car trouble can be a real nightmare, but performing a pre-trip vehicle check helps drivers avoid a vacation breakdown disaster, says the Car Care Council.

“When dreaming about summer vacation, the thought of a roadside breakdown can be terrifying,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Performing a pre-trip driveway inspection gives motorists peace of mind by reducing the chance of unplanned, costly car trouble and providing an opportunity to have any repairs performed by a trusted technician before hitting the road.”

Right in their own driveway, motorists can determine how road ready their vehicle is with a 10-minute vehicle check. If service or repairs are needed, they can be performed in advance to ensure safety and reliability on the road.

Check the tires including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.
Check filters and fluids including engine oil, power steering and brake, and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.
Check the brakes and battery to be sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free and that the brakes are functioning properly.

The Car Care Council also recommends that motorists restock their emergency kit, consider a pre-trip tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy, and order a free copy of the Car Care Council’s popular Car Care Guide for the glove box at www.carcare.org/car-care-guide.

Seven Signs Your Brakes Need to be Inspected

Motorists should remember that routine brake inspections are essential to safe driving and maintaining your vehicle.

“When it comes to vehicle safety, the brake system is at the top of the list, so have your brakes checked by an auto service professional at least once a year,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Knowing the key warning signs that your brakes may need maintenance will go a long way toward keeping you and others safe on the road.”

The Car Care Council recommends that motorists watch for seven signs that their brakes need to be inspected:

Noise: screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.
Pulling: vehicle pulls to one side while braking.
Low Pedal:brake pedal nearly touches the floor before engaging.
Hard Pedal: must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.
Grabbing: brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.
Vibration: brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking conditions.
Light: brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.
Brakes are a normal wear item on any vehicle and they will eventually need to be replaced. Factors that can affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material.
Using the Car Care Council’s free personalized schedule and email reminder service is a simple way to help you remember to have your brakes inspected and take better care of your vehicle. It is an easy-to-use resource designed to help you drive smart, save money and make informed decisions.

Keep Calm and Drive On

If the summer heat drives you to distraction, the last thing you need is a malfunctioning air conditioning (A/C) system when you’re on the road. Checking your vehicle’s A/C annually will help you keep your cool when temperatures soar, says the Car Care Council.

“Getting stuck in traffic is stressful enough, but getting stuck in traffic during the heat of summer without a functioning A/C is the pits,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “It is important to always have the A/C system properly maintained to keep it in tip-top shape and avoid costly repairs down the road.”

A vehicle’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning system (HVAC) keeps the interior cabin comfortable in any season by providing the right temperature and humidity level. A thorough inspection should be performed annually and a typical A/C service consists of the following steps:

A service technician checks pressures to test operation, refrigerant charge and outlet temperatures.

If the system is found to be low on refrigerant, a leak test is performed to find the source of the leak. Keep in mind that if your vehicle is leaking refrigerant, it is damaging the ozone layer.

Refrigerant may be added if necessary to “top off” the system, although some states do not allow “topping off.”

A technician may also check for evidence of refrigerant cross-contamination, which is the mixing of refrigerants.

A/C service should also include a check of the compressor’s drive belt and tension.

“Checking the A/C once a year is key to making sure your cooling system is running efficiently all year long,” White said. “A properly running HVAC system will help improve your gas mileage, is more environmentally-friendly and will keep you calm as you drive on.”

The Car Care Council’s free personalized schedule and email reminder service is a simple way to help you take better care of your vehicle this summer and throughout the year. It is an easy-to-use resource designed to help you drive smart, save money and make informed decisions.

Dodge nabs CHP cars

Dodge announced that the famed California Highway Patrol (CHP) has ordered over 580 Dodge Charger Pursuit police cars, to be delivered over the next two years.

The CHP is the largest state police agency in the nation, and this is their first major purchase since the end of a low-balled, three-year exclusive deal to buy Explorer-based Ford Police Utility crossovers. The CHP-Ford contract was a deciding factor in the move of other fleets from sedans to crossovers and SUVs.

The contract is the result of a competitive bidding process led by the California Department of General Services; the state takes performance into account. Local agencies within California will also be able to piggyback onto the contract, buying with the same price and equipment.

The Michigan State Police conduct similar tests, which are also published and used by other agencies.

Some of the cars in the order have the 12.1-inch touchscreen which integrates with law enforcement computers, an industry first which should increase safety and convenience.

Most of the sedans will be V6-powered to gain the EPA-rated 26 mpg highway mileage (police Chargers still have five-speed automatics; civilian cars are rated at 31 mpg). All are rear wheel drive, though there are police-edition AWD Chargers.

A small number of Charger Pursuits with 370-horsepower Hemi V-8 engines will be used by instructors at the CHP’s Emergency Vehicle Operations Course in Sacramento. All the cars should be in service by the end of the calendar year.

Feeling the Summer Heat? Your Car Battery is Too

If the heat of summer is wearing you down, it is likely taking its toll on your car battery too. Contrary to popular belief, summer highs rather than winter lows pose the greater threat to battery life, according to the non-profit Car Care Council.

Sooner or later all batteries have to be replaced. Excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, thus damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate, leading to slow death for a battery.

“When most motorists think of dead batteries that cause starting failure, they think of severe winter weather, but summer heat is the real culprit,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Many battery problems start long before the temperatures drop. Heat, more than cold, shortens battery life.”

Colder temperatures increase the thickness of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over, causing the battery to have to work more. These factors lead to harder starting.

To get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following simple steps:

Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary. Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified.

Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

Battery Test By A TechnicianDriving habits such as frequent engine on/off cycles will cause more wear on the starter than a simple back and forth to work. Other factors include driving and weather conditions, mileage, vehicle age and excessive electrical draws like in-vehicle entertainment systems. Check the battery if you notice headlights and interior lights dim, accessories that fail to operate, or the “check engine” and/or battery light illuminated.

Heat exhaustion vs. heatstroke: What are the warning signs and how should you react?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on average, over 600 people die from complications related to extreme heat each year in the United States - more than tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, lightning or any other weather event combined.

Heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, but it's important to identify the warning signs and to react swiftly and appropriately when they arise.

What's the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke?

Heat exhaustion is the precursor to heatstroke and is a direct result of the body overheating.

According to Mayo Clinic, heat exhaustion is identifiable by heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat, muscle cramps, nausea and headache.

These symptoms may develop over time or come on suddenly, especially during or following periods of prolonged exercise.

When heat exhaustion is not addressed, heatstroke can follow.

Heatstroke is the most severe heat-related illness and, without emergency treatment, it can lead to death. It results when your body temperature rises to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

"This is pretty complicated because a lot of things can happen. The short answer is it certainly can be fatal...," Peter Sananman, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine at Penn Medicine, said.

At this temperature, your brain, heart, kidneys and muscles can also become damaged, leading to serious complications or death. In the case of heatstroke, seeking medical attention is an absolute must, Sananman said.

In addition to a high body temperatures, the symptoms of heatstroke include altered mental state or behavior, nausea and vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing and racing heart rate.

"Generally with heat exhaustion, a patient is sweating a lot, whereas with heat stroke, they've stopped sweating and are actually dry. It's a good rule of thumb but isn't always true," he said.

If heat exhaustion is suspected, Sananman advises to remove the sufferer from heat and cool them down, if possible.

This can be done by getting out of the sun and removing or loosening tight clothes, misting the body with water or placing ice packs in the armpits and groin.

Additionally, rehydration is key. Consume plenty of water and avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine or high amounts of sugar, he said.

If you or someone else is experiencing heatstroke, seek immediate medical attention.

How can you prevent heat-related illness?

Though it's important to know how to identify heat exhaustion and heatstroke, both are preventable illnesses. Have situational awareness, Sananman said.

"Recognize your own symptoms and either go to a cool location/rest or ask for help if you have difficulty getting around," he said. Additionally, understand that the body does acclimatize to heat, but it will take days to do so.

"So if you haven't been in the heat in many weeks or months, just be aware that your body will not handle it as well as it may have in the past when you were acclimatized," he said.

Proactively hydrating will help keep the body at a safe temperature.

"Drink more than what you think you should," Kent Knable, EMS chief at Centre Life Link, said. "Once you start feeling thirsty, you're actually dehydrated. So, you should be drinking to the point where you're not feeling thirsty at all."

Additionally, respond immediately if you start feeling ill.

"If you're starting to feel ill, or are not feeling well, get out of the sun. Get into the shade," Knable said. "Getting the sun off of you and some cool air blowing against you will help lower your temperature."

Child Passenger Safety: Get the Facts

Know the stages
Make sure children are properly buckled up in a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt, whichever is appropriate for their age, height and weight.

Birth up to Age 2: Rear-facing car seat.
For the best possible protection, infants and children should be buckled in a rear-facing car seat, in the back seat, until age 2 or when they reach the upper weight or height limits of their particular seat. Check the seat’s owner’s manual and/or labels on the seat for weight and height limits.

Age 2 up to at least Age 5: Forward-facing car seat.
When children outgrow their rear-facing seats they should be buckled in a forward-facing car seat, in the back seat, until at least age 5 or when they reach the upper weight or height limit of their particular seat. Check the seat’s owner’s manual and/or labels on the seat for weight and height limits.

Age 5 up until seat belts fit properly: Booster seat.
Once children outgrow their forward-facing seat, (by reaching the upper height or weight limit of their seat), they should be buckled in a belt positioning booster seat until seat belts fit properly. Seat belts fit properly when the lap belt lays across the upper thighs (not the stomach) and the shoulder belt lays across the chest (not the neck). Remember to keep children properly buckled in the back seat for the best possible protection.

Once Seat Belts Fit Properly without a Booster Seat: Seat Belt
Children no longer need to use a booster seat once seat belts fit them properly. Seat belts fit properly when the lap belt lays across the upper thighs (not the stomach) and the shoulder belt lays across the chest (not the neck). For the best possible protection keep children properly buckled in the back seat.

Install and Use Car & Booster Seats Properly
Install and use car seats and booster seats according to the seat’s owner’s manual or get help installing them from a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Find a child passenger safety technician.

Don't Seat Children in Front of an Airbag
Buckle all children aged 12 and under in the back seat. Airbags can kill young children riding in the front seat. Never place a rear-facing car seat in front of an air bag.

Seat Children in the Middle of the Back Seat
Buckle children in the middle of the back seat when possible, because it is the safest spot in the vehicle.14

Use Proper Restraints Every Trip
Buckle children in car seats, booster seats, or seat belts on every trip, no matter how short.

Parents and Caregivers: Always Wear a Seat Belt
Set a good example by always using a seat belt themselves.

Who’s winning the minivan race?

Chrysler now has three minivans, the Pacifica, Town & Country, and Caravan. The other real competitors, for the moment, are the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna; the Nissan Quest and Kia Sedona have not had much of an impact.

At FCA, year to date and for June 2016, the winner has been the Dodge Caravan. This is not surprising, given a combination of incentives and longevity (the Pacifica is new and the Town & Country has ceased production). Dodge has sold 71,523 Caravans in the US in 2016, including 13,473 in June alone.

Chrysler has lagged Dodge, with the Town & Country hitting 6,054 sales in June and the Pacifica hitting 7,207 (13,261 total). Year to date, the two Chryslers hit 65,637 (55,448 T&Cs, and 10,189 Pacificas). So far, the lead remains with Dodge, and the Pacifica is unlikely to beat the Town & Country in year to date sales until winter though it already has the lead in monthly numbers.

Meanwhile, Toyota sold 11,416 Siennas for the month, 68,225 for the year; and Honda had 11,963 Odyssey sales for the month, and 64,661 for the year. Both Japanese companies ended up below either Dodge or Chrysler (a combined 13,261) for the month, and Honda was below Dodge and Chrysler for the year.

Officials considering state-wide fireworks ban this year

Our recent string of dry weather could have an impact on the way we celebrate the Fourth of July. The State Fire Marshal says the dry weather conditions could make fireworks even more dangerous this season, and is considering a state-wide ban on consumer fireworks.

Several communities in Michigan have already banned them, though none of the bans are in the immediate metro Detroit area.

On average, June is usually our wettest month. But this month, we're about two inches behind on our rainfall. Looking back. Memorial Day weekend was the last time metro Detroit saw good rain.

The FOX 2 Weather Authority team says the last time it was this dry was in June of 2012. This month, we've had 1.30" total rain, but our normal rainfall for this month is typically around 3.30".

Legally, the days to fire these off are the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday coming up. We spoke with Tiffany, who works at a fireworks tent on Telegraph in Southfield who offered some simple tips regardless of if there's a ban or not.

"The best thing to do is just try to put yourself in an open area, away from trees, grass, things like that," she says. "If for some reason you can't and you're in a neighborhood, just be aware of your surroundings."

She suggests moistening your ground with a sprinkler or hose during the day so it won't be as dry come nighttime when you light the fireworks off.

While she may take a hit in profits this season, she still believes she'll be selling plenty of fireworks.

"People are pretty comfortable with fireworks nowadays; it's not a brand new thing," she says.

FOX 2's Roop Raj spoke with the governor's office, who says as of this hour the ban on consumer fireworks has not been passed. The State Fire Marshal will have the final say.
