Keep Your Car Breathing Well: Change the Air Filters
You need clean air to breathe and so does your car, and a vehicle’s air filters make that possible. The non-profit Car Care Council reminds car owners to have the engine and cabin air filters inspected and changed regularly to ensure vehicle longevity and interior comfort.
“Air filters are your vehicle’s first line of defense against contaminants that reduce cabin air quality and negatively impact engine performance,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Community car care events held throughout the country reveal that nearly one out of five vehicles is in need of air filter replacement, so it’s evident that motorists often overlook this simple, yet important service.”
The vehicle’s engine air filter traps dirt particles that can cause damage to engine cylinders, cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings and bearings, leading to the engine losing power. The air filter also plays a critical role in keeping pollutants from contaminating the airflow sensor on fuel-injected cars. A normal wear item that requires regular checks and replacement, air filters should be inspected at each oil change and replaced annually or when showing other signs of contamination.
The cabin air filter is responsible for cleaning the air entering the passenger compartment. Under normal circumstances, it helps trap pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases that may find their way into a vehicle’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, compromising interior air quality and damaging the system. Most cabin air filters are accessed through the panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or placed within the interior of the vehicle. A cabin air filter should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, it should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or per the owner’s manual.
To help motorists “be car care aware,” the Car Care Council has free tools on available on its website, including a personalized service schedule, an 80-page Car Care Guide in English and Spanish, and a Car Care Minute video about cabin air filters.

Does the TRX presage a Jeep Trackhawk Hellcat?
The Ram TRX is the first publicly-shown vehicle that hooks up the Hellcat engine to a four wheel drive system. It dropped down to 575 hp, but that’s a hundred horsepower more than the 6.4 Hemi and even further above the Ford Raptor.
A Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has been rumored since before the Hellcat was even shown to the public. Insiders said that FCA leaders were concerned the engine be too loud or uncouth for the refined Grand Cherokee, and that the cost would be too high.
The supercharged Hemi turned out to be relatively quiet, and easily controllable — surprisingly so, in fact. It might be hard to whip it around corners at speed in the big Jeep, but at least it’ll be possible to drive it gently.
There are still many questions, but sources have told Allpar that there are Grand Cherokee Hellcat mules running around, and that the Hellcat would be detuned for the purpose. Whether they turn out to be “commercial” — practical for commercial sale — is still up in the air. See the Ram 1500 Rebel TRX.

Pacifica’s rings of silence
Reviewers have commented on the quiet interior of the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivans, and have praised its combination of ride and handling. According to FCA US engineer Jeff Tibbenham, it’s a matter of rings.
As the engineer in charge of body structure, Mr. Tibbenham said that deflection — the twisting of the car body by rough roads — leads to squeaks and rattles, which have a major impact on owner satisfaction. To fix that, Chrysler placed five reinforcement rings around the Pacifica (see the illustration).
“These rings work together to minimize the effects of deflection caused by uneven roads,” said Mr. Tibbenahm at a recent conference. The added torsional stiffness also helps in cornering.
The market seems to be responding; the Pacifica commands higher transaction prices than the outgoing Town & Country did, and has shot up to the #2 sales spot though supplies of the new minivan may still be limited in some areas, and the “base model” slot is handled by the Dodge Caravan.

First “New Compass” review
Motorchase has posted, if not the first review of the new Compass, the first review in English. With their blessing, we are posting a summary of writer Gustavo Henrique Ruffo’s Camp Jeep experience.
The tested Compass was Brazilian, and the US/Canadian model is likely to sport different engines than the tested Fiat diesel. The ZF nine-speed is common to both.
Body strength was shown off by a series of alternating holes that keep two or three wheels up in the air at a time. Mr. Ruffo reported that the Multijet diesel’s strong torque was more than enough for the off-road experience. “The Compass confidently overcame obstacles, even a 19-inch-high water tank (at 5 mph) [units converted from metric].”
From Camp Jeep, Mr. Ruffo concluded, “In all the trail-like situations, the Compass Trailhawk felt very comfortable to drive and also capable of dealing with most scenarios.”
For the 25-mile roadway drive, including city and highway, Motorchase again got the Trailhawk, and commented on the smoothness of the engine and the high visibility. They did say that the automatic didn’t change gears quickly enough in low-rev situations, but that acceleration was still good.
The Trailhawk, not surprisingly, has a stiff suspension, with “harsh and short” body motion, but high stability at speed and low body roll. Fortunately, Mr. Ruffo was also able to test the Longitude, and spoke more favorably of its road manners:
…the SUV was an example of good behavior. Potholes produced no harsh noises, only minor body shakes. … Uneven asphalt also does not cause the boat movements that often make passengers sick.
Motorchase praised the spaciousness in back, but criticized the low seats — while up front they noted the seats were comfortable but did not have enough thigh support in the off-roading course.
Mr. Ruffo concluded that the new Compass “will be a sales phenomenon” around the world. Priced competitively with compact sedans, but in crossover form, it is in the heart of the market. [Original story at Motorchase]

Dodge Challenger ADR prototypes spied with massive rubber
In an effort to give the Dodge Challenger one last hurrah before making the switch to the Giorgio platform in 2018, Automotive News reports that the automaker will come out with the Challenger ADR. The ADR, which stands for American Drag Racer, is expected to be a wide-body, Hellcat-powered variant that is closely based off of the current model. The report seems to have merit, as photographers have captured Challenger prototypes testing with massive tires.
The prototypes look extremely similar to the current Challenger SRT Hellcat with the same hood scoop, front fascia design, rear spoiler construction, and rear end. The white and purple vehicles, though, are wearing extremely wide tires. The extra-wide rubber on the prototypes appear to have a similar tread design as the ones found on the Dodge Viper ACR, which features the grippy Kumho Ecsta V720.
While the ACR wears 295 mm tires at the front, the car's rear tires are massive at 355 mm. The tires found on the prototype don't appear to be as large as the ones found on the ACR, but are expected to be larger than the current Challenger SRT Hellcat's, which are Pirelli P Zero Neros measuring 275 mm at all four corners. The Challenger ADR, with its wider, stickier tires is expected to cater to drivers that are looking to put all of the supercharged 6.2-liter V8's power to the ground.
The rear-wheel-drive ADR is expected to come with a wide-body kit, which is missing from the prototypes. The Hellcat-powered, wide-body Challenger ADR is expected to make an appearance later in 2017, with an all-wheel-drive model (sans Hellcat engine) known as the GT AWD following closely thereafter.

Basic Auto Care Many Drivers Miss
Fluids and lubricants rank among the most neglected items when it comes to basic auto care, says the non-profit Car Care Council.
Community car care events held throughout the country found that the top-three fluids most likely to be low or contaminated are windshield washer fluid in 26 percent of inspected vehicles, followed by engine oil at 23 percent and coolant at 19 percent.
Windshield washer fluid keeps dirt and debris from collecting on a vehicle’s windshield, allowing the driver full visibility and making it an essential safety item. Windshield washer fluid should be checked monthly and drivers should use a fluid that is specially formulated for their climate.
Engine oil lubricates the moving parts of a vehicle’s engine, helping keep the engine clean and preventing wear and overheating. Neglecting to change a vehicle’s oil can lead to costly repairs, including replacement. Engine oil levels should be checked frequently and changed per the owner’s manual.
Coolant absorbs heat from the engine and dissipates it through the radiator and heat exchanger. Because coolant breaks down over time, neglecting it can lead to corrosion, rust and engine overheating. Flushing and replacing coolant every six to 12 months, depending upon climate, will help prevent costly repairs.
“Checking fluids and lubricants is easy to put off, but each is critical to your vehicle running properly and safely,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The good news is that they are easy to check and inexpensive to replace. Whether you do it yourself or visit a trusted technician, be sure to inspect your vehicle for any possible signs of trouble so you can address minor service needs before they turn into major repairs.”
