The car allowance rebate system, also know as CARS, is a Federal Program that helps you purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle at a participating dealer when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle. The government program allows for credits of $3500 - $4500 to help facilitate the purchase or lease. Complete rules may be found at www.cars.gov.
In order to receive this rebate your vehicle must qualify first. Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date, and in the case of a category 3 vehicle, must also have been manufactured not later than model year 2001. It must have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less, be in drivable condition and have been continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in.
(*Very large pickup trucks and cargo vans have different requirements.)
