2014 Polaris RZR XP 1000
One-upmanship is the name of the game in the side-by-side world, with each manufacturer trying to outdo the competition with more power and better suspension. Every model year the technology and engineering marches forward with new models that seem to render the last batch of high performance rippers obsolete. But how much further can the envelope be pushed before the prices and speeds are just too much for the average Joe. Polaris seems intent on taking it to the limit, and its latest RZR, the $19,999 2014 Polaris RZR XP 1000, might be the machine that is the first to bump up against that ceiling.
The 2014 RZR XP 1000 is a whole new machine from the ground up. It’s bigger, faster and better suspended than any RZR that has come before. Even the most extreme, race-modified side-by-sides from a few years ago couldn’t match the specs offered up by the XP1000. It’s clear this new RZR is the king of the hill even before getting behind the wheel. 107 horsepower, 18 inches of travel, 13.5 inches of ground clearance and a MSRP of $19,999. The numbers are impressive in every way.
We headed to Parker, Arizona to find out if the numbers don’t lie. Polaris set us loose for the day on sections of the Best in the Desert Parker 425 racecourse. That right there shows how much confidence the Minnesota manufacturer has in the XP 1000. Not much is harder on equipment than desert racing and that is effectively what we did for the day.
From the first stab at the gas pedal, it was clear that the power on tap from the XP 1000’s ProStar powerplant is on an entirely new level. The bottom-end grunt that is put to the dirt through the PVT transmission is eye opening. There is so much on tap right from the get-go that you either spin the tires in the loose dirt or get pressed deep into the seat when the traction is good. The power continues to build just as strongly through the mid-range and finally tapers off at the top-end. I’ve never driven a stock machine with so much speed and power on tap. For the first time in a side-by-side, I actually say that this is fast enough. I was never left wanting more.
Throttle response is snappy and along with the strength of the powerplant, breaking the rear end loose in both 2- and 4-wheel drive is easy at just about any speed. And when things go sideways, you’d better be ready. Due to its abundance of suspension travel the XP 1000 has more body roll than previous models, even with a new, larger sway bar. When the weight rolls to the outside of the corner, the rear suspension squats on the gas and lifts the front inside wheel. At first it can be unsettling for a novice driver, but after a few times you adjust your comfort level and driving style. Just don’t expect to jam it into a berm like you would with a slower and lower machine. Respect the power, speed and wheel-travel and all is good.
And, wow, does the RZR XP 1000 have wheel-travel. Up front the 2-inch Walker Evans piggyback shocks stroke through 16 inches, and at the rear massive 2.5-inch units give 18 inches of travel. Just for comparison, the RZR XP 900 has 13.5 and 14.5 inches front and back. Both ends are adjustable for preload and compression, but the stock settings are just about perfect. After slamming through some seriously deep whoops we stopped and added four clicks of compression damping to counter some bottoming of the chassis with two butts in the seats. No other changes were needed for the rest of the day. This RZR just eats up anything you point it at. It is complaint in the small stuff and can handle huge jumps with ease. Although there is no option for rebound damping adjustment, the rear end doesn’t kick up unless the suspension is slammed hard into a steep-faced obstacle. Most of the time it is well controlled and confidence inspiring.
Polaris’ Electronic Power Steering makes tight turns and rock trails a dream. Not once did we experience any kickback to the wheel, and the response is quick. One small criticism is that the front-end feel is slightly numb in comparison to non-EPS machines. The trade-off is quite worth it, however.
Braking performance from the four-wheel disc brakes featuring 248mm rotors and dual piston calipers is spot-on for the speed and weight of the XP. Pedal feel is very positive and the wheels do not lock prematurely. When they do lock, the rear does first allowing the front wheels to continue slowing the machine.
The new cockpit feels slightly larger than the XP 900 and the switchgear, gauges and layout is similar, yet is of higher quality. The glove box is significantly larger and the second center box features a handy smartphone holder. Honestly when I read about this feature I wrote it off as a gimmick, but it is my favorite user feature on the dash. The clear screen allows for you to use your phone as a navigation device.
The addition of half doors to the XP could be the most useful non-performance improvement. No longer do you have to fight with the silly netting and clips when getting in and out of the side-by-side. Opening and closing is easy and secure, thanks to its solid slam latch. I will say that a full door would have been better as roost off the front wheels can enter the opening below the door.
Driver and passenger comfort has also been improved with the new seats. Under-seat sliders allow for easy forward and back adjustment of both the deeply bolstered seats. In the corners they limit side-to-side movement, giving the driver more control. Not to mention they are some of the most comfortable OEM units out there.
The 2014 Polaris RZR XP 1000 has, without a doubt, raised the bar for performance side-by-sides. It is truly the first UTV that requires the driver to be aware of how much power, suspension and handling is on tap and to drive accordingly. It’s an intense experience that even the best drivers will find satisfying. We’ve entered a new era in side-by-sides, one that will take talent and willpower from the one behind the wheel. I can’t wait for what comes next, but for now the XP 1000 is more than enough.

Nissan Pathfinder
After revitalizing sales of the legendary Pathfinder nameplate with the 2013 introduction of an all-new fourth-generation design, Nissan's iconic SUV takes another major step forward in the 2014 model year with the introduction of the first-ever Pathfinder Hybrid.
At the heart of the new Pathfinder Hybrid – which is offered in 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive configurations – is its supercharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor paired to a compact Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. The Li-ion battery fits under the 3rd row seat so there is no compromise of passenger seating capacity, 2nd or 3rd row legroom or cargo space.
The hybrid system uses a Nissan Intelligent Dual Clutch System (one motor / two clutch parallel system) that efficiently manages power from both the electric motor and the gas engine. The 15 kW electric motor and gas engine work in tandem to provide performance equivalent to the non-hybrid Pathfinder's 3.5-liter gasoline V6. The system is rated at 250 net horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque – versus the 3.5-liter V6 ratings of 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to the new Pathfinder Hybrid, enhancements for 2014 include:
- New SL Tech Package, featuring Bose® 13-speaker Premium Audio System, Nissan Navigation System, voice recognition, XM NavTraffic and NavWeather capability (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), Zagat® Restaurant Survey, Bluetooth® Streaming Audio and 8.0-inch color touchscreen monitor

Plymouth car collector is still cruising along at 103
When Margaret Dunning takes her '66 Cadillac on Detroit's Woodward Avenue this week, Dream Cruise fans will see two classics on display — her car and its amazing 103-year-old driver.
"Oh, I wouldn't miss it, the Dream Cruise," Dunning said. "I'm out on Woodward every year."
The 19th annual Woodward Dream Cruise is Saturday although, as always, hordes of auto enthusiasts have been cruising Woodward for weeks.
Dunning turned 103 in June, but this remarkably spry, 5-foot-tall "lady driver," as she calls herself, still loves to drive. And sometimes, floor it. Like the proverbial Little Old Lady from Pasadena, immortalized in song by California duo Jan and Dean in 1964, Dunning likes to go fast.
"Which one?" she replied with a laugh, when asked whether she'd ever had a speeding ticket.
"I got clocked at 72 awhile ago," she said with a grin, declining to say on which local road.
Last week, she showed visitors her stable of collector cars parked in an oversized, heated garage behind her house in Plymouth.
She chatted knowledgeably about each car, sat in the driver's seats and patted the side of her 1931 Ford Model A pickup, saying, "This is my sweetheart. It'll go all day."
As Dream Cruise fans know, Woodward's cruising heyday was the 1950s and '60s, when young men revved hot rods from drive-in to drive-in. For the annual reincarnation of cruising Woodward, however, no one shows off the populist, come-all quality of the Dream Cruise better than Dunning.
And for her, that's old hat because she has trashed age and gender expectations for nearly a century when it comes to cars — learning to drive at 8, becoming her newly widowed mother's licensed chauffeur at 11 and being the rare single woman who trucked vintage cars to collector shows since the 1950s, according to her biography at the Plymouth Historical Museum.
Explaining her passion for cars, she sounds like any enthusiast.
"You just get into into internal combustion and it takes over on you," she said, standing next to her '66 Cadillac DeVille, with sandalwood tan paint and beige leather-and-cloth seats.
"I grew up on a farm with a lot of machinery, and my mother maintained everything. I was an only child and my father would be fixing something so he'd ask me to get him a tool. I couldn't help but be fascinated," she recalled.
Soon, she was tinkering and fixing.
Dunning's father died in 1923, "and my mother couldn't drive, so she got me a car to drive her — a Model T, of course," Dunning recalled. "I could drive because I was used to driving all over our farm."
Dunning still lives in the tidy Tudor house her mother built near downtown Plymouth in 1927, after they moved off the farm. Somewhere around World War II, she started collecting classic cars.
Dunning has a fondness for Caddys. Her daily drive is a silver 2003 Cadillac Seville. She also owns a two-tone 1975 Cadillac Eldorado in chocolate-brown and tan with matching tan convertible top, wide whitewalls and a steering wheel wrapped in faux leopard skin.
One car clearly close to her heart is a cream-and-black 1930 Packard Model 740 convertible. According to the ClassicCarZ website, Dunning bought the car in poor condition in 1949, had it fully restored and soon was the recipient of the first 100-point winner from the Classic Car Club of America. She took it on some hot laps this spring at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Video of Dunning's laps made her a hit on YouTube.
Close to home, she's been driving on Woodward each year for the Dream Cruise for more than a decade. Her usual Dream Cruise ride is the '66 Cadillac DeVille.
"It's all-original — all factory, right down to the exhaust," and never been repainted, said Dan Clements, a Ford engineer who maintains Dunning's collection.
"Got about 73,000 miles now, and she bought it with 29,000," said Clements, 56, of South Lyon.
What keeps this dynamo running strong after more than a century? It might be her daily bowl of oatmeal. It can't be the rest of her diet: friends say she shuns vegetables.
But part of how the never-married Dunning stays remarkably vigorous at her age, they say, is by nurturing her love of owning, driving and appreciating old cars, and by mixing with people who share that interest.
"At the car shows we go to, she'll stand there all day, talking to anybody who comes along," Clements said, after loading Dunning's Packard into a trailer for a car show Saturday in Benton Harbor.
"And she does Woodward every year, her and my mother-in-law," he added.
Dunning can't imagine anyone who doesn't get at least a tingle of excitement from the memory-triggering cultural history that's revving on Woodward Avenue, she said.
"I think everybody has a car somewhere in their life, maybe their father's car, or even a neighbor's car from their childhood, that's their dream car," she said.

2014 Indian Chieftain First Ride
Of all the motorcycles Indian introduced last night to a packed house on Sturgis’ Main Street, the one that elicited the biggest response from the crowd was the 2014 Indian Chieftain. And for good reason. The sculpted fairing has a bold, aggressive design, blending the new and exciting with familiar cues like the signature Indian valanced fenders just below it. It was the one motorcycle its new Polaris owners introduced that deviated the most from the norm. Including a bagger in its initial offerings was a savvy marketing move by Indian Motorcycle. It continues to be one of the most popular segments and there’s numerous custom builders doing big things with them in the aftermarket. Just look at Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation.
Indian brass stated it has one goal in mind with the new lineup. To build the premier premium American motorcycle. As it moves forward toward that goal, it pays tribute to the brand’s Springfield heritage and its long history that dates back to 1901 as the first 1901 production models coming out of Spirit Lake will be numbered. The launch of the new models includes plenty of firsts for the Indian brand. The cast aluminum chassis is a first on an Indian, the bike’s skeleton providing both the weight savings and rigidity Indian sought as it attempted to pull mass out of the frame. The progressive linkage system used on the Chief Vintage and Chief Classic is another first on an Indian Motorcycle. The 2014 lineup includes the first hard-faired bagger the company has produced, too.
The Thunder Stroke 111 engine powering the trio of 2014 Indian Chiefs doesn’t share any parts with other powerplants Polaris produces either. Its unit construction crankcase is comprised of two castings. It has large fins that not only help in cooling but feature the same finning and parallel pushrod tubes as Chiefs from the early 1940s. It has a 5.5 quart oil capacity to keep those almost four-inch pistons oiled up and drumming. And do they drum. Indian has worked hard to keep mechanical noise down so its exhaust note is the bike’s defining auditory signature. And I’ll admit, the bike does put out a powerful, throaty growl when you’re on the throttle as it dishes out the lofty claims of 119 lb-ft of torque at the 3000 rpm plateau. This figure exceeds company expectations as Indian initially was shooting to get power numbers in the 115 lb-ft range.
During Indian’s technical presentation on the bike, they said the Chieftain’s styling cues were drawn from Indians from the 1950s, bold bikes with distinctive lines. But the new version departs from the norm by being the first Indianproduced with a hard fairing and hard bags. Indian designed them not only with function in mind, but made them quickly detachable and with the ability to be remotely locked via the bike’s key fob. The saddlebags are big enough to stuff my backpack in which generally holds my 17-inch computer.
The starting process is all-electronic with a key fob taking the place of a traditional key. As long as it’s within proximity of the bike, it will start up. You can turn it on by depressing a button on the tank or engage the electrical system by pushing the traditional handlebar mounted start button once, then press it again to turn the bike over.
Sitting in its leather saddle for the first time, it feels compact for a bagger. The Chieftain is fairly slim in the saddle and it’s easy to get both feet securely on the ground at stop. Its ergos are relaxed and upright courtesy of highway bars and floorboards. The Chieftain’s seat has a comfortable contour and Indian said it intends to adopt it on the other two models as well.
The motorcycle is well-balanced so it’s easy to control during slow speed maneuvers on overcrowded Lazelle Street. Despite its generous size, the fork-mounted fairing doesn’t weigh steering down. Between the wide fairing and the electronically adjustable windscreen, the tandem shelters riders well so there’s little buffeting. The four-inch power windshield is activated via a button on the left handlebar. It pumps 100 watts of audio through two speakers mounted in the front fairing. The sound is clean and loud. The motorcycle also has the capacity to run your smartphone through it and link to your music lists through Bluetooth.
The gear sets on the six-speed transmission have been engineered to quell mechanical noise, and after riding the 2014 Chieftain up to Nemo and through Vanocker Canyon, we’d have to say they accomplished their goal. Gears engage smoothly and quietly as its big, high capacity clutch doesn’t require a lot of spring force. The clutch lever is firm but not stiff and the throttle-by-wire system is dialed so response to input is crisp. It’s so non-descript, it took me a little while to think about the functionality of the transmission because it was easing into gear so naturally. Considering the tremendous amount of torque the engine is doling out, this is no small feat of engineering.
The 2014 Chieftain has good ground clearance thanks to boards positioned high which allows for plenty of lean. It has both the tightest rake of the three new Indian models at 25-degrees and the shortest wheelbase at 65.7 inches. The combination adds up to a bagger that is more than willing to lean into the turns and track true once it gets there.
The engine is smooth yet powerful. Not punchy but strong and consistent. We wanted to crack its throttle more but confess that traffic in Vanocker prevented us from getting the full monty. On the rare occasion we did get to open it up, it pulls with the authority you’d expect from an 1811cc engine. Vibrations in the bars are almost non-existent. In addition to the surface area of its cooling fins, it has an airbox built into the cast aluminum frame to help keep heat down.
The front brakes are powerful thanks to twin 300mm floating discs up front. Four-piston calipers put a strong squeeze without having to mash the lever hard. The units aren’t overly bitey but pressure is immediate and even. Braking duties get an assist from ABS that are part of the factory package, assisting the single 300mm disc out back.
Besides being attractively designed, the instrument console is placed intuitively, the round dial of its analog speedo easy enough to read at speed, as is the analog tach placed opposite it. Between the two dials is a digital readout with four different screens and plenty of information to toggle through. Among its functions are a clock and outside temperature gauge, radio, satellite radio, a plug-in audio device, range indicator, odometer, and a tire pressure PSI readout. Cruise control comes standard and is operated via the right switch control.
The new Indian Chiefs have been the buzz of Sturgis. Every time we stop, someone will approach with a story about an Indian they owned and just about everybody we talked to has responded positively on the direction Polaris has taken.
“The original Indian was an everyman machine and these guys have brought that back,” said one gentleman we met called Ed Murphy, the unofficial “Mayor of Suches, Georgia.”
The 2014 Indian Chief combines classic cues with modern performance and technology. It will run your Bluetooth, tell you your tire pressure, has throttle-by-wire and ABS. It has traditional running lights in the fairing but features integrated LED turn signals too. Classic cues include the red hue the marque is known for, swooping fenders and a lit War Bonnet emblem on the front fender. Its crown jewel is its engine that sits like a mother of pearl within the six-piece modular frame. But it’s more than just a pretty face. It’s like a punch in the nose, which Indian just delivered to its competitors.

Announcing the New 2014 Indian Chief Classic, Chief Vintage & Chieftain
America’s first motorcycle company, Indian Motorcycles, came roaring back to life Saturday night at the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S. Dakota, where the company unveiled not just one, but three new models to challenge market leader Harley Davidson.
The new bikes combine Indian’s iconic styling with modern technology features like a new Thunderstroke 111 engine, keyless ignition, electronic throttle, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and a windshield that powers up or down.
The ambitious rollout by parent Polaris Industries, the $3.2 billion-a-year maker of snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, comes after a series of false starts by previous owners in the 60 years since Indian went bankrupt.
One big difference is the price: Polaris repositioned the brand to go head-to-head with Harley by cutting thousands of dollars off the sticker of each of its new models.
The new lineup includes the Indian Chief Classic, starting at $18,999; the Indian Chief Vintage, at $20,999, and the Indian Chieftain, at $22,999. Until now, Indian bikes were priced as high was $37,000 but suffered from marginal quality. They will arrive in dealerships in September.
The new Indian Chief Classic is a pure, powerful cruiser featuring iconic styling like valanced fenders, leather saddle, classic tank-mounted instrumentation, tear-drop fuel tank design, and sculpted and lighted front fender war bonnet, along with bells and whistles like keyless ignition, antilock brakes, cruise control, throttle-by-wire and dual exhaust.
The Indian Chief Vintage offers soft-sided leather bags, leather fringe, chrome fender tips, vintage chrome badging on the front fender and a quick-release windshield for easy installation or removal.
The Indian Chieftain is the first Indian to offer a molded front end, or fairing, with integrated driving lights, and a power windshield. Standard features include hard saddlebags featuring remote locks and quick-release anchors, a high-output audio system featuring integrated Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
“Indian always has been thought of as a classic cruiser,” said Steve Menneto, Polaris’ vice president of motorcycles. “What we’ve been saying from day one is we are going to be true to Indian’s roots. They were very innovative and progressive back in the day.” Referring to the Chieftain, he said, “This bike exemplifies how we are going to go in new directions. It shows where we’ve been and where we’re going.”
“It’s been a grueling, exciting and very expensive 27 months,” said Polaris chief executive Scott Wine. The company spent nearly $100 m to develop the bikes, he said.
“When we acquired Indian Motorcycle two and a half years ago we set out to capture the heart, soul and legendary heritage of this iconic American brand and then infuse it with unparalleled design, engineering and state-of-the-art technology,” said Wine. “On Saturday night we revealed three stunning new Indian Chief models that represent the results of our journey and the future of this brand. It was a triumphant day for all of us.
The Sturgis motorcycle rally was a fitting location for the unveiling since the event, which typically draws 400,000 bikers a year, was founded in 1938 by a local Indian dealer, Clarence “Pappy” Hoel. “We wanted to connect to our heritage,” said Menneto.
The company is quickly adding dealerships, and expects to have 125-140 North American and 70 international dealers by year end. Demo rides will be available starting later this month.

2013 Chrysler 300 | When Good Ideas Converge
The success of a small business owner depends in no small amount on
how he or she can reconcile ideas which are commonly thought to be polar
opposites.
For example, in order to lead well, one must have 100% confidence in
oneself as a leader. Then again, one must also lead with humility, being
on the lookout constantly for ways to improve and knowing full well
that there is always more to learn.
In this case, balancing two seemingly opposed ideas—confidence and
humility—produces a well-rounded leader, which in turn can produce a
smooth-running business. When it comes to vehicles, balancing a series
of seemingly opposed ideas—power and efficiency, affordability and
luxury, to name just a few—can produce a car well-suited for just about
any business. That car is the Chrysler 300.
Power/Efficiency
The 3.6-liter Pentastar® V-6 engine with eight-speed automatic transmission produces up to 300 horsepower at little cost to overall efficiency. With an EPA-estimated 19 city/31 highway mpg, the Chrysler 300 rivals many midsized sedans, including the 2013 Chrysler 200, no slouch itself when it comes to mpg.For more power, owners can step up to a 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine that delivers a respectable efficiency (25 mpg highway) despite also delivering a road-gripping 363 horsepower. This is thanks in large part to the HEMI engine’s Fuel Saver Technology, which optimizes fuel efficiency when V-8 power is not required.
Luxury/Affordability
Every detail in the Chrysler 300 is designed with refinement in mind. While the advanced acoustic properties reduce outside noise and increase interior peace, premium finishes and soft-touch materials lend depth to surfaces found throughout the cabin, creating a complete picture of luxury, but not one that will break the bank.Business owners interested in pricing out the Chrysler 300 will find the MSRP compares favorably to similar vehicles in its class, especially when one considers the vehicle’s quality and quantity of features that come standard with purchase.
